Winning for the First Female Iraq War Combat Veteran in Congress

In 2014, our comprehensive findings helped first-term Illinois U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth triumph over fellow Iraq vet Larry Kaifesh. Given similar combat backgrounds, research was the difference.

Our pursuit of a trove of public records related to Kaifesh’s military career allowed Duckworth to capitalize on the contrasts in his record, which included the endorsement of military torture and stripping women service members of their reproductive rights.

Duckworth won a decisive victory by 11 points and would go on to win a U.S. Senate seat in 2016.
