Winning An Open Southern House Seat — Alabama 5th (2008)

In 2008, Nesbitt Research assisted the DCCC research team in its investigation of Republican Wayne Parker in Alabama’s 5th Congressional District. An open seat in 2008 after nine-term incumbent Democrat Bud Cramer retired, the 5th was widely rated as one of the most competitive races in the country. We compiled a comprehensive research report on Parker that highlighted his support for the fair tax, his record as a lobbyist, his fierce anti-immigration stance, and his history of taking contributions from questionable sources, including former Enron Chairman Ken Lay, indicted former Congressman Tom Delay, and former Vice President Dick Cheney. Armed with our research, Democrat Parker Griffith won the hotly contested election with 52 percent of the vote, carrying six of the seven counties in the District.
